Francesco Mazzucchelli è attualmente assegnista di ricerca presso il Dipartimento di Comunicazione dell'Università di Bologna e membro della segreteria scientifica del Centro studi interdisciplinare sulla memoria e i traumi culturali, TraMe.
Ha conseguito il dottorato di ricerca in Semiotica a Bologna. Nel 2011 è stato Visiting Research Fellow presso il Manchester Architecture Research Centre della University of Manchester.
Le sue ricerche si indirizzano verso un’indagine dei nessi che legano memoria e spazialità e verso un approfondimento in chiave semiotica della nozione di “traccia”. Si è occupato, in particolare, di restauro architettonico e urbano (visto come pratica non solo di conservazione, ma anche di cancellazione e riscrittura della memoria) e del tema della violenza politica in spazi urbani (in particolare in relazione alla nozione di "urbicidio"). Gli altri suoi interessi di ricerca riguardano soprattutto le teorie del conflitto, l'etnografia urbana, l'analisi semiotica dei testi, il web e le nuove tecnologie.
Nei suoi lavori si è a più riprese occupato delle recenti trasformazioni socio-culturali del sud-est balcanico, dopo il crollo della Jugoslavia.

Francesco Mazzucchelli is research fellow at Dipartimento di Comunicazione dell'Università di Bologna and member of the Scientific Secretary of TraMe, the Interdisciplinary Centre for the Study of Cultural Memories and Traumas.
He achieved his PhD in Semiotics from the University of Bologna, with a dissertation, titled “The Memory of the City”, about post-war urban transformations in some cities of the former Yugoslavia. In 2011 he was appoitned Visiting Research Fellow at Manchester Architecture Research Centre, in the University of Manchester.
His research interests deal mainly with the relationship between memory and spatiality; he is also interested in architectonic restoration and reconstruction, seen as a practice of “urban memory rewriting” and in post-conflict societies (especially in regard to "divided cities" and phenomena of political violence against the city, such as "urbicide").
He also works on conflict studies, urban ethnography, semiotic analysis of texts, web analysis, memory studies, balkan studies, ICT studies.
Many of his researches are focused on recent socio-cultural transformations in South-Western Balkans (after the collapsing of Yugoslavia).

He is the author of several academics essais and of the book "Urbicide. The sense of places between destruction and reconstruction in former Yugoslavia"
